Sinus Elevation in Stamford

A Sinus Elevation, or Sinus Lift, is a surgery that is designed to increase the quantity of bone available in the maxilla (upper jaw bone) for implant placement. The sinus floor is gently elevated and bone grafting material is placed into the newly created space to augment the jaw bone.

There are two forms of sinus elevation surgery: an internal sinus lift and an external sinus lift. The type of sinus lift required depends upon the amount of native bone present at the time of surgery.

The posterior maxilla has been one of the most difficult areas to place dental implants successfully because there is often insufficient bone for implant placement. When the maxillary teeth are lost or there is bone loss due to periodontal disease, the distance between the sinus floor and the alveolar ridge decreases, leaving less bone for implant placement. A sinus lift helps to correct this problem.

Sinus elevation takes approximately 4-9 months to heal at which time implants can be placed. However, if there is adequate bone present at the time of sinus elevation surgery the implants may be placed simultaneously.

Internal Sinus Elevation (Sinus Lift)

Bone loss from periodontal disease or from not replacing teeth in a timely manner often results in inadequate bone available for implant placement.

If there is 6-8mm of native bone available an internatl sinus lift is performed.

The internal sinus lift surgery is an extension of the implant placement surgery.

The implants are often placed at the time of the sinus lift surgery.

External Sinus Elevation (Sinus Lift)

Bone loss from periodontal disease or from not replacing teeth in a timely manner often results in inadequate bone available for implant placement.

In order to place implants, a bone graft must be placed to reestablish adequate bone for implant placement.

An incision is made to the gums to expose the under bone, a small window is made in the bone in order to gain access to the sinus, and a bone graft is placed.

After 7-9 months of healing a dental implant or implants can be placed.
